Nothing sends a mom to Google like an inconsolable baby. While there are a lot of things that may be going on and of course, consulting your pediatrician is always important, there’s also a good chance that your sweet little bundle is just plain ol’ gassy. This is natural. They’re digesting new things on their own for the first time. This is no easy task.
Thankfully, there’s things you can do to help. Most of these you've probably heard of. If you’re nursing, you’ll want to avoid certain foods in your diet like dairy, gluten, intense spices (garlic, onions, cayenne), and gas producing vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts). Making sure baby is latching properly and in a slightly elevated position during and up to 45 minutes after nursing is also helpful. Remembering to burp baby after every meal (even if it takes 10 minutes of patting) and if you notice he/she has a little gas, the baby bicycle is also helpful. Aaaannnd…reach for an over-the-counter medication like Mylicon. No, wait! Before doing that, there’s an easier, healthier, and more effective way.
I don’t know about you but to me, a good home remedy always sounds a thousand times better than something mass produced and sitting on a shelf at Walmart. The thing is, sometimes they end up working as well as they sound and sometimes they don’t. In this case, the home remedy works like a charm.
All you need is some organic fennel (easily found in the spice section of the grocery store) and a coffee grinder. Fennel is a mild herb that is excellent for enhancing digestion. It helps to prevent and relieve gas and abdominal pain. And bonus - it's a galactagogue, meaning that it increases milk flow. Way to feed two birds with one (fennel) seed.
Here’s what you do:
1. Grind fennel in the coffee grinder.
2. Put 1-2 tsp in a tea ball or tea filter like this.
3. Steep in a covered mug of boiling water for 10 minutes.
4. Drink. Nurse your baby and pass on the goodness.
